Mabel H. Spurlock

Mrs. Mabel H. Spurlock, age 95 of Anna, died at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in the Anna Rehab and Care Center in Anna. She was born July 12, 1918 in Union County, the daughter of Frank and Roxie Kimmel Williams. She married John Spurlock on May 5, 1934 in Wolf Lake. He preceded her in death on May 28, 2007.

A-J’s Goforth advances to sectional golf tournament

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School golfer Brock Goforth competed as an individual Monday, Oct. 14, at the IHSA boys’ class 1A sectional golf tournament in Robinson.

Goforth shot a 99, which did not allow him to qualify for the state tournament. Only the top 10 advanced.

Nashville was one of three teams that advanced to the state tournament. Nashville finished first at Robinson with a team score of 323.

College’s writing contest open to high school students

Shawnee Community College is sponsoring a writing contest which is open to area high school students.

The Celebrating Young Writers contest has three categories: short fiction, poetry and nonfiction essay.

Entries will be judged by college faculty and staff members in two divisions: 9th/10th grade and 11th/12th grade.

The deadline to submit entries is Feb. 14. The contest has no entry fee.

Off-highway vehicle usage stamps to be issued in Illinois starting in 2014

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, plans to start issuing Off-Highway Vehicle, OHV, usage stamps in 2014.

The department stated in a news release that the program is seen as an “important step toward improving Off-Highway Vehicle access.”

The new OHV usage stamp is scheduled to be available in early 2014 at DNR Direct license and permit point-of-sale vendor locations throughout the state.  

The annual stamps are part of the IDNR sustainability funding package passed last year and will be sold beginning in January.  

Mrs. Elaine Rude

Mrs. Elaine Rude, age 94 of Springfield, formerly of Cobden, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2013 at her home in Springfield. Elaine was born in Alto Pass Illinois on August 27, 1919 to Lawrence L and Lena R. Lamer (nee Angell). She married Charles A. Rude on October 11, 1941 in Jackson, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 6, 2005.

A-J rallies for win at Sparta

The visiting Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team learned that any game can be close in a 36-30 win over Sparta Friday night, Oct. 18. The game came down to the final possession.

“It was a lot closer than it should have been,” A-J football coach Brett Detering said. “We allowed them in the second half to get back in it.”

4-1 Wildcats set to face Panthers

The 4-1 Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team will travel to 3-2 Pinckneyville to play the host Panthers this Friday night.

The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna. The game also can be heard online by visiting www.annanews.com.

Pinckneyville lost to a winless Du Quoin team 14-3 last week.

“We didn’t play bad football last week,” Panthers’ coach Todd Thomas said.

“They’re a good team and we played them on their homecoming,” Thomas said about Du Quoin.

Mark Alan Johns

Mr. Mark Alan Johns, age 48 of Jonesboro, died at 5:37 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born October 22, 1964 in Anna, the son of Jesse Marion and Grace Louise Walker Johns.

Fund established to help family

A fund has been established at the Anna-Jonesboro National Bank for Brandon Miller, the son of Cory and Dawna Miller of Anna.

Brandon has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and will require a kidney transplant.

Dawna Miller, Brandon's mother, will be the kidney donor.

The fund, called the Benefit Fund for Brandon Miller, will help to cover expenses associated with the transplant.

Donations can be made at any of the Anna-Jonesboro National Bank locations in person or by mail.
