Herrin defense will test Wildcats

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team’s offense will face a big challenge this Friday night.

The 7-1 Wildcats are set to host a 6-2 Herrin squad which boasts a strong defense.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.  at The Pit for A-J’s Senior Night game.

The game will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna. The game also can be heard live on www.annanews.com.

“Our offense will be tested,” A-J coach Brett Detering said. Detering noted that Herrin has only given up 38 points in the last seven weeks.

Virginia L. Douglas

Virginia L. Douglas, 85, of Dongola, died at 12:32 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1928, in Union County, the daughter of Mellie Lawrence, Vera Sivia Lawrence Fisher and stepfather William Fisher, who raised her from the time she was 5.

She married Fred Douglas on Oct. 26, 1946.

She was a member of the Wetaug Church of Christ and Ben Hur Life Association representative from 1962 to 1988.

Man sentenced on meth charge

Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced Oct. 22 that Charles L. Kimmel Jr., 23, of 115 Kohler St. in Anna has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy: unlawful participation in methamphetamine production, which is a Class 1 felony.

Kimmel was arrested on Sept. 17 following an investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office in connection with methamphetamine and heroin activity at the residence at 115 Kohler St.

Service to purchase new ambulance

The Union County Ambulance Service is moving ahead with the purchase of a new vehicle.

A bid for a new ambulance was approved at last week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Friday morning at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

During discussion about acquisition of the new vehicle, several members of the county board asked that the bidding process be expanded when the ambulance service decides to make its next purchase.

‘Walk PAST’ historical book available

Walk PAST” self-guided historical book is available.

The new book takes a walk down Anna’s West Davie Street, which was once named Railroad Street. 

The research of Dr. Susan Whitemountain takes readers back to early Anna family-owned businesses that have caused the little railroad town to thrive from 1854 to 2013.

Interviews with current business owners and families bring the stories up to date.

Weather forces change in some trick-or-treat schedules

Heavy rain predicted to dominate throughout Halloween day has created changes in trick-or-treat schedules at two Union County communities.

Both Anna and Dongola moved the event to Friday, Nov. 1. Hours in Anna will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

As of Thursday morning, Thursday trick-or-treating remained on the Thursday evening for Junesboro and Cobden. Cobden hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. and Jonesboro hours are from 6 to 8 p.m.

A-J set to face host Robinson Saturday in opening round of IHSA Class 3A postseason playoff action

Anna-Joneboro Community High School football coach Brett Detering knows his team will have a big task this Saturday when the Wildcats play host Robinson in the first round of the IHSA Class 3A football playoffs .

"They've got one good running back who has quite a few yards (rushing)," Detering said. "They are more a run-oriented team."

Kickoff time is scheduled for 2 p.m. The game can be heard on WIBH radio in Anna. The game also can be heard live on www.annanews.com.

'Canteen' will be remembered

It takes awhile to complete the “strike” of a major theatrical production, to put it to bed, to put all the props and costumes away, to roll up the scenery, to find a spot for the fake piano top, the 1941 radio, and the juke box that was real in our hearts, playing all the 1940s tunes, and to hug all the hugs before we move forward to whatever may be next for each of us.

Willie Wayne

Mr. Willie Wayne, age 70 of Anna, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Mulberry Manor. He was born April 15, 1943 in Chicago, the son of Aaron and Mary Jane Wayne.

         Willie is survived by all his family and friends at Mulberry Manor. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Fallapalooza event will help to support The Fellowship House

The Fellowship House Treatment and Prevention Center in Anna is planning to host a Fallapalooza celebration Saturday, Oct. 26, in Anna.

Fallapalooza is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parish hall at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 402 Freeman St.

A chicken and dumpling dinner with homemade desserts will be prepared by  their cook, Betty Webb.

Live music will feature different musicians every 45 minutes.
