Health care law focus of presentations

Free community presentations about new health care laws, the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplace, are being presented in Anna.

The presentations are scheduled at Rural Health Inc. at 513 N. Main St. in Anna.

The programs began Nov. 7 and are scheduled to continue Thursday, today, and again on Thursday, Nov. 21. The programs begin at 6 p.m.

Those who attend the programs will have an opportunity to learn about how the new health care laws apply to them and their families.

A-J Junior Wildcat Wrestling Club begins practice for new season Nov. 5

The A-J Junior Wildcats Wrestling Club officially kicked off its season Monday night, Nov. 5, with the club’s first practice.

Practice was held in the lower gymnasium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

With just a month until the club’s first tournament weekend, there is much work to do but the Junior Wildcats’ coaches are optimistic about the season.

“We’re very athletic this year,” said head coach Grover Mays. “We’ve also signed up some older kids who look to be really tough.”

C.B. Yeckley

Mr. C.B. Yeckley, age 77 of rural Anna, died at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at his home. He was born April 19, 1936 in Goreville, the son of Marion Gus and Emma Gene Durham Yeckley. He married Mary Wright on October 8, 1960 in Jonesboro.

Leatrice J. Pearl

Leatrice J. Pearl, 86, of Carbondale, and formerly of Rantoul, from 1968 to 1997, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at 1:28 a.m. at Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna.

She was born on April 19, 1927, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Morris and Elizabeth Weiner Camiel.

She married Daniel Lewis Pearl on Sept. 7, 1948, in Boston, Mass. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 1994.

George E. Fitch

George E. Fitch, 89, of Anna, and formerly of Wolf Lake, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. 2013, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born on Jan. 15, 1924, in Makanda, the son of Edwin Bryden and Effie Lockard Fitch.

He married Geraldine Hess on July 10, 1945, in Osceola, Ark. She preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2011.

Dispatch services addressed by Anna council

The Anna City Council continues to review a proposal to have all of the city's dispatch services handled by the Union County Sheriff's Office.

The proposal was on the agenda at last week's regular meeting of the Anna City Council.

The meeting was Tuesday evening, Nov. 5, at Anna City Hall.

Union County officials recently met with the Anna City Council to discuss the dispatch proposal. The cost of providing the service has been a key point of discussion for the city.

Names of more World War II heroes added to memorial at veterans home

In late spring of 2012, a memorial on the grounds of the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna was dedicated.

The memorial honored nearly 40 men from Union County who died in service to the country during World War II.

Members of Anna’s Townsend F. Dodd Post No. 344 of the American Legion  have spearheaded the effort behind the creation of the memorial.

Much work went into finding the names of 38 men whose names originally were engraved on the memorial.

Now, the names of 35 more heroes have joined those of their comrades on the memorial.

Ten A-J football players earn all-conference honors

Ten Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football players have earned 2013 Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division all-conference honors.

Players selected to the all-conference first team offense were senior running back Damian Reed, junior tight end Zane DeWitt, junior wide receiver Noah Fuller and sophomore kicker Dakota Earnhart.

Senior quarterback Jay Kemp was named as an at-large selection.

Holiday art exhibition set at Cobden gallery

anthill gallery & vintage curiosities in downtown Cobden plans to present its fifth annual Off the Wall holiday group artist exhibition through Dec. 22.

An artist appreciation reception for the exhibit is planned from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23.

anthill gallery’s holiday group artist exhibition represents original art and craft of 75 artists and artisans from Southern Illinois and across the United States.

Edith L. Foster

Mrs. Edith L. Foster, age 102 of Anna, died at 8:20 a.m. Monday, November 25, 2013 in the Jonesboro Rehab and Health Care Center. She was born July 3, 1911 in Wolf Lake, the daughter of Willis and Amanda Rhodes. She married George Foster in Union County. He preceded her in death in 1947.
