Anna School District 37 announces second quarter honor roll students:

Lady Wildcats post three wins

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ basketball team won three games in action last week.

A-J 70, Sparta 35: Kim Mixen scored 25 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the visiting Lady Wildcats to the win in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference action Thursday, Jan. 24.

Brooke Chamness scored 20 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Lady Wildcats. Cara Farris added 8 points, Katie Grant 6 and Sam Clary 4.

Aly Reynolds and Erikah Parks had 3 points each and Sammy Brimm 1.

Edith L. Nance

Edith L. Nance, 89, of Jackson, Mo., and formerly of Anna, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1923, in Union County, the daughter of Logan and Edith Wilson Blaylock.

She married William Nance on April 10, 1954. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1987.

She retired from Thorngate Manufacturing in Cape Girardeau.

She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and six brothers.

Former Jonesboro man sentenced to 48 years

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds on Wednesday, Jan. 23, reported that a former local man has been sentenced on sexual assault, pornography and weapons charges.

Edmonds reported that Gregory F. McCord, 51, formerly of 200 E. Heacock St. in Jonesboro, was sentenced to 48 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on multiple charges.

McCord was charged with sexually abusing and taking lewd photographs of a young family member in 2006 and 2007.  

School commended

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School hosted another successful American Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday, Jan. 23. This special community service effort was sponsored by the A-JCHS Student Council.

More than 90 people were donors at the blood drive. Each donor shared a very special gift – the Gift of Life.

A-JCHS students were among those who were donors at the blood drive. Students also volunteered their time to help with work which helped to ensure that the event ran smoothly.

Paul Ray Grigsby

Paul Ray Grigsby, 78, of Harrisburg, and formerly of Anna, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Saline Care Center in Harrisburg.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1935, the son of Bernie and Flora Powers Grigsby. They preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Services will be private. Entombment will be at the Murdale Gardens of Memory at a later date.

Arrangements are being handled by Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.

Anna Competitive Cheerleaders compete at state championships

The Anna Indian Competitive Cheerleaders traveled to Springfield for the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championships, which were Feb. 9-10.

The squad of 11 girls competed against 23 other small junior high schools from across the state.

The cheerleaders have spent countless hours preparing for the competition, and their hard work paid off.

The squad was awarded 12th place, receiving recognition in the awards ceremony and a plaque for its accomplishment.

Margo Ferrara

Margo Ferrara, 65, of Anna, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the Anna Rehab and Nursing Care Center.

She was born on June 9, 1947, in Portsmouth, N.H., the daughter of Clarence and Louise Schirmer.

She married Ralph Ferrara in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1993.

Harper Bailey Francis

Harper Bailey Francis, infant daughter of Timothy Francis and Stephany Bailey of Cobden, died at 11:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

She is survived by her parents; one brother, Deyton; three sisters, Lanie, Kaylie and Carlie; her maternal grandmother, Robin Ramsey; her maternal grandfather, Thomas Bailey; her paternal grandparents, Rick and Ruby Francis; her maternal great-grandmother, Linda Knauer; aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
