Anna Competitive Cheerleaders compete at state championships

The Anna Indian Competitive Cheerleaders traveled to Springfield for the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championships, which were Feb. 9-10.

The squad of 11 girls competed against 23 other small junior high schools from across the state.

The cheerleaders have spent countless hours preparing for the competition, and their hard work paid off.

The squad was awarded 12th place, receiving recognition in the awards ceremony and a plaque for its accomplishment.

Margo Ferrara

Margo Ferrara, 65, of Anna, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the Anna Rehab and Nursing Care Center.

She was born on June 9, 1947, in Portsmouth, N.H., the daughter of Clarence and Louise Schirmer.

She married Ralph Ferrara in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1993.

Harper Bailey Francis

Harper Bailey Francis, infant daughter of Timothy Francis and Stephany Bailey of Cobden, died at 11:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

She is survived by her parents; one brother, Deyton; three sisters, Lanie, Kaylie and Carlie; her maternal grandmother, Robin Ramsey; her maternal grandfather, Thomas Bailey; her paternal grandparents, Rick and Ruby Francis; her maternal great-grandmother, Linda Knauer; aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

PAST plans open house

As a part of the upcoming Civil War Weekend  sponsored by the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County, PAST is planning to host an open house at its new home at 102 S. Main St. in Jonesbor.

The open house is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Each room of the house will feature something about the life of Abraham Lincoln.

Exhibits will mark Lincoln’s early life, as well as his adulthood in Illinois.  

​Glenna M. Griffith

<em>Glenna M. Griffith, 89, of Peoria, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at 7:40 p.m. at home surrounded by her immediate family.</em>

<em>She was born on Sept. 10, 1923, near Buncombe, on the family farm, the daughter of Clifton and Jennie Caraker Merriman.</em>

<em>She married Glenn E. Griffith on Jan. 25, 1946, in Anna. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1987.</em>

Joan Bartruff

Joan Bartruff, 81, of Anna, died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at her home in Anna.

She was born on Jan. 26, 1932, in Jonesboro, the daughter of Clarence and Virgie Bass Tweedy.

She married Harold Bartruff on Feb. 17, 1951, in Jonesboro. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1991.

Missouri man sentenced on meth charge

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Tuesday, Jan. 29, that William D. Ray, 37, of Doniphan, Mo., had been sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, which is a Class 1 felony.  

Ray was also sentenced to a concurrent term of six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one count of obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony.  

Right to carry meeting slated

A Union County right to carry town hall meeting is planned Tuesday night, Feb. 26.

The meeting is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Blue Boar at 920 Kratzinger Hollow Rd. near Anna.

The event is being sponsored by IllinoisCarry.com. For more information, call 618-963-2788.

Organizers say that a panel of experts is scheduled to be on hand at the meeting.
