Mr. Arty Oard Adams, age 96 of Cobden, formerly of Cypress, died at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in the Anna Rehab and Nursing Center. He was born January 29, 1917 in the southeast corner of Union County, the son of Harrison and Grace Penrod Adams. Arty married Coleta Osman, she preceded him in death. He later married Reba Brasel.
Mr. Jason Paul Caraker, age 41, of Cobden died Monday, January 27, 2014 in Cobden. He was born November 1, 1972, the son of Marvin and Mary Sue Moreland Caraker. He married Brandi Sadler on October 18, 2003 in Cobden.
Mrs. Annie May Blaylock, age 98 of Anna, died at 10:40 a.m. Friday, January 3, 2014 in the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born September 24, 1915 in McClure, the daughter of Aud and Ola May Clever Rogers. She married Charles Blaylock on July 18, 1936. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1995.
Mrs. Kathleen Winn, age 90 of Saratoga, died at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 in the Jonesboro Rehab and Nursing Center. She was born April 8, 1923 in Saratoga, the daughter of George and Nancy Catherine “Nannie” Russell Lence. She married David Darwin Williams; following his death she married Ray Rendleman. Later she married Collin Winn.
Joe McCommons, 65, of rural Dongola, died at 11:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at his home in Dongola.
He was born on April 18, 1948, in Anna, the son of Ira Junior “Jod” and Betty June Hileman McCommons.
He married Bonnie Dunn on July 15, 1966, in Union County.
The Internal Revenue Service plans to open the 2014 filing season on Jan. 31 and has encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.
The new opening date for individuals to file their 2013 tax returns will allow the IRS adequate time to program and test its tax processing systems.

Mr. Daniel Louis Fox, age 46 of Cobden, died at 10:12 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in Elco. He was born April 25, 1967 in Carbondale, the son of James Rollin and Mary Louise Musgrave Fox.
Union County residents found themselves dealing with brutally cold arctic weather conditions early this week.
Such weather had not been seen in the region for nearly two decades.
The website for the National Weather Service office in Paducah cautioned area residents about "an arctic outbreak of potentially historic proportions."
The weather service's forecast warned that Monday could be "the coldest day since early February of 1996. . .and possibly the coldest day on record."
On Dec. 30, a well-known family in funeral service in the region became owners of the 155-year-old Barkett Funeral Home of Cairo.
Bryan and Stacey Crain, owners of Crain Funeral Homes, in their 81st year and fourth generation of service to the area, have purchased the Barkett firm from David and Betty Barkett.
The Dec. 30 date was a milestone, as it marked the 40th anniversary of the Barketts’ service to the families of Alexander and Pulaski counties.
