Federal budget agreement could cost rural counties millions in funding

The Union County Board of Commissioners says that the recent Ryan-Murray federal budget agreement could cost rural counties millions in funding.  

The House version of the federal budget references a program that reimburses counties for federal land but does not specifically fund it, the county board said in a December news release.

Betty June Gibbs

Mrs. Betty June Gibbs, age 82 of Jonesboro, died at 11:02 pm January 20, 2014 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born November 29, 1931 in Saratoga, the daughter of Willie Everett and Mildred Nimmo Landis Trove. She married Wilburn Ray Gibbs on October 6, 1951 in Jonesboro.

Jason Caraker

         Mr. Jason Caraker, age 41, of Cobden died Monday, January 27, 2014 in Cobden.

         Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.

        Junior Wildcat Wrestling Club faces tough competition on road

        The A-J Junior Wildcats Wrestling Club faced some tough competition while on the road for the third weekend of tournament action and going 18-41 as a team.  

        The Wildcats were represented at tournaments in Edwardsville, Highland and Belleville and the Holiday Duals at Winchester Christian Academy.

        Five Wildcats made the rainy Saturday trip to Edwardsville with Noah Chotner placing third in the 6&U division and wrestling at 47.4 pounds.  

        Hazel Pauline Vaughn

        Hazel Pauline Vaughn was born on April 29, 1923 to Mamie and Everett Vaughn in Anna, Illinois and died on December 22, 2013 in Orange, California.

        Raised on a farm in Balcom, Illinois, she was the oldest of four siblings:  Herself, Audrey, Patricia and Barbara.

        Eugene “Gene” Childers

                 Mr. Eugene “Gene” Childers, age 82 of Cobden, died at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2013 in the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. He was born June 29, 1931 in Anna, the son of George and Nellie Nimmo Childers.

                 Gene is survived by his three sisters, Reba Childers of Cobden, Ann (Floyd) Landis and Evelyn Fay (Delano) Bridgeman all of Anna; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, James Childers.

        Mary Lou Sitter Dick

        Mary Lou Sitter Dick of Cobden and formerly of Anna, Itasca, and Chicago, Illinois passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014 in her home with her family. She was 89.

        Mary Lou was born in Anna, Illinois on March 9, 1924. She attended grade and middle school in Anna and graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, Illinois, where she was active in sorority activities, cheerleading, and school politics, serving as her class vice president.

        She was married to Bernard Dick on January 30, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois and together they had five children.
