Shawnee’s Aiden McMahan signs letter of intent with Rend Lake

Aiden McMahan of Wolf Lake has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Rend Lake College Warrior baseball team at Ina next year.

The signing and an accompanying photograph were highlighted on the college’s website.

The lefthanded hitting catcher is the son of David and Angie McMahan. 

He led the Shawnee High School Redskins to the state tournament last year, hitting .350 with four homeruns and posting a 0.79 ERA on the mound.

McMahan also spent last summer playing for the Missouri Bulls, a summer program out of Cape Girardeau. 

Virginia Rose Cerney

Virginia Rose Cerney, 91, of Anna, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, in Anna.

She was born on July 6, 1922, in Union County, the daughter of Samuel Washington and Glenna Alice Boyd Williams.

She married Louie Cerney on Feb. 25, 1972. He preceded her in death on June 21, 2013.

She was a member of the Anna Heights Baptist Church. She was an excellent seamstress and very hard worker.

Daniel Marcus Johnson

Daniel Marcus Johnson, age 53, of Cairo, died at 12:59 P.M. Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his home.

Private graveside funeral services will be held at Mound City National Cemetery.

Lick Creek girls fourth at state

The Lick Creek girls’ basketball team earned a fourth-place finish at this year’s Illinois Junior High School Association girls’ Class S state tournament played at Rend Lake College at Ina.

Hoyleton-Grand Prairie defeated Lick Creek 40-21 in the third-place game at the state tournament Saturday, Feb. 1.

This is the second consecutive year that the Lady Eagles have finished fourth at the state tournament.

Sydney Heath had 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal to lead Lick  Creek.

Louis T. Moreland

Mr. Louis T. Moreland, age 88, of Anna, died at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in the Chateau Girardeau, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born June 25, 1925 in Cobden, the son of Tullie E. and Afton Stout Moreland. He married Mary Ann Cruse on December 31, 1949. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2013.

Smithsonian exhibition coming to Union County

Baseball. Soccer. Hockey. Bowling. Kickball. Surfing. 

People around the country are drawn to compete in these sports and many others. 

Still more gather on the sidelines to cheer for their favorite athletes and teams. Nowhere do Americans more intimately connect to sports than in their hometowns. 

The Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street, MoMS, program celebrates this connection in the new traveling exhibition “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.”

Civil War Weekend starts Friday

Union County area residents will have an opportunity to see history come to life during a multitude of events which are planned this weekend.

A Civil War Weekend is planned Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7-9, in Anna.

The weekend is sponsored by the Shawnee Hills Art Council at the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County.

Most of the Civil War Weekend events will take place at the Anna Arts Center. The arts center is located at 125 W. Davie St. in Anna.
