Louis T. Moreland

Mr. Louis T. Moreland, age 88, of Anna, died at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in the Chateau Girardeau, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born June 25, 1925 in Cobden, the son of Tullie E. and Afton Stout Moreland. He married Mary Ann Cruse on December 31, 1949. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2013.

Smithsonian exhibition coming to Union County

Baseball. Soccer. Hockey. Bowling. Kickball. Surfing. 

People around the country are drawn to compete in these sports and many others. 

Still more gather on the sidelines to cheer for their favorite athletes and teams. Nowhere do Americans more intimately connect to sports than in their hometowns. 

The Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street, MoMS, program celebrates this connection in the new traveling exhibition “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.”

Civil War Weekend starts Friday

Union County area residents will have an opportunity to see history come to life during a multitude of events which are planned this weekend.

A Civil War Weekend is planned Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7-9, in Anna.

The weekend is sponsored by the Shawnee Hills Art Council at the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County.

Most of the Civil War Weekend events will take place at the Anna Arts Center. The arts center is located at 125 W. Davie St. in Anna.

<strong>Anna-Jonesboro Community High School student athlete Damian Reed has signed a national letter of intent to play football at McKendree University in Lebanon. A signing ceremony was held last week at A-JCHS. Those present to watch Reed sign his letter included, in the first row, his grandmother, Joni Yates of Anna, and his mother, Bethany Waters of Anna. Standing are Reed’s grandfather, Don Yates of Anna, and A-J football head coach Brett Detering.</strong>

Doris Hayden

Doris Hayden, 57, of Anna, died at 10:46AM Friday, February 21, 2014 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Doris was born Nov. 7, 1956 in Carbondale, daughter of Leonard Leon and Edna Faye Duty Hopkins. Doris married Jeff Hayden Aug. 10, 1974.

She was a teacher at Anna Jr. High for 10 years, a member of local and state Teacher’s Association. Doris was an avid softball and volleyball fan, mainly of her children. She loved spending time with her grandson Hayden.

Civil War Weekend held in Union County

The history of the Civil War came to life last weekend in Union County. 

The 2014 Civil War Weekend was hosted by the Shawnee Hills Art Council at the Anna Arts Center and the PAST organization of Union County.

Civil War Weekends have been held for the past several years in Union County. The events are being held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which was fought from 1861 to 1865.

Last weekend featured a wide range of events, activities, programs and exhibits.
