Be sure to vote

Union County voters once again will have a chance to do a little bit of exercise next Tuesday.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, is Election Day. Union County voters will join Americans throughout the country in deciding the outcome of very important elections, from The White House to the courthouse.

The nation's next president will be elected on Tuesday, with the incumbent facing a tough challenge.

Locally, voters will determine the outcome of races for positions on the Union County Board of Commissioners and county coroner. Propositions also are on the ballot which could help some residents of the county to save money on what they pay for electricity.

If you are registered to vote, we encourage you to do so next Tuesday. If you have already voted, we say congratulations. Your exercise is well worth noting.

Students, teacher commended

Students from Shawnee, Egyptian and Cairo high schools gathered last week to learn how they could work together to raise awareness about a very critical issue.

The students met at Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake. They discussed further action which could be taken to heighten public awareness about aging levees and flooding in the southern tip of Illinois.

Thanks to the guidance of support of teacher Jamie Nash-Mayberry, students at Shawnee High School have already done a lot to make all of us aware of the need to improve an aging river levee system.

There is a lot of work to be done, though. The students, and their teacher, are very aware of the challenge. And they are ready to meet the challenge head on.
