Bigler relishes challenge as he runs for state office

The transition from being a local political candidate to one seeking a major state office has been a big one for Michael Bigler of Anna, but it's a challenge he's relishing.

Bigler is the Democratic candidate for the Illinois State Senate's 58th District. Part of Union County is in the Southern Illinois legislative district.

Bigler's previous political experience included election to the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School District 81 Board of Education and the Anna City Council, on which he now serves.

Now he is facing State Sen. David Luechtefeld, R-Okawville, a 17-year incumbent, in a key state legislative race.

"When I was approached by Senate Democrats in April, it seemed like a tough task. But the district has been remapped, Sen. Luechtefeld no longer lives in the district and I'm committed to doing my best," Bigler said.

"He's not a bad person and hasn't done a bad job," Bigler said of his opponent,  "But I have my ideas and want to offer a choice."

Bigler has worked hard on the campaign, going door-to-door throughout the eight-county district at every opportunity.

"I like the grassroots approach. People agree with what I think more than they disapprove," he said. "Finding common ground with the voters is the same attitude I want to take to Springfield."

Bigler said he wants a bipartisan approach to state government. "It doesn't matter to me if I work with Mike Bost or Brandon Phelps. If it's in the best interest of our region, I'll work for it.

"Partisan politics has left our nation and state at a standstill. If one party had all the answers there would only be one party.

"The problems, unfunded liability and the deficit, didn't happen overnight; we can't fix them overnight. We have to start a plan now and stay the course."

He expresses pride in being the southernmost candidate for state office in Illinois.

"Through my service on the school board and city council I've gotten a very good feeling for the feelings of the people of Union County. I don't believe it's that different from the rest of the district.

"My wife and I are proud to live in the town where we were born We plan on living hear and raising our family. I'm ready to serve this area and our state and don't want to be the first generation to leave our children with less than we have."
