Blizzard brings 'nightmare' conditions to area

Union County residents found themselves digging out from under a blanket of wet, heavy snow after a blizzard swept through the region Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The snow was accompanied by strong winds, with gusts topping 30 miles per hour.

The exact amount of snow which fell on the Union County area was not available at press time Wednesday.

Snowfall estimates in the county ranged anywhere from 5 inches to 11 inches.

The website for the National Weather Service, NWS, at Paducah on Tuesday issued a blizzard warning for the region which was in effect on Tuesday and continuing through noon on Wednesday.

The Union County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday morning reported numerous accidents involving vehicles which slid off snow-packed roads.

"It's been a nightmare" a sheriff's office dispatcher said Wednesday morning about road conditions in the county.
