Chance for white Christmas about 15 percent

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

The National Weather Service, NWS, forecast office in Paducah says there's about a 15 percent chance of a white Christmas happening in the region which includes Union County.

For the record, a white Christmas, as defined by the National Climatic Data Center, is one with an inch or more of snow on the ground at 6 a.m.

The last white Christmas in the region was in 2004, when there were 9 inches of snow on the ground at Paducah. This was the result of a record snowfall on Dec. 22.

Many parts of Southern Illinois experienced a white Christmas in 2002.

The NWS forecast for the region calls for a chance of snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
