Cobden goes 1-2 in tournament play
The Cobden High School boys’ basketball team finished 1-2 in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.
Following are game summaries:
Goreville 72, Cobden 55: The Blackcats built an early lead on their way to the win to eliminate Cobden Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Goreville led 21-15 after one quarter and took over in the second quarter to build a 40-24 halftime lead. The Blackcats led 57-38 going into the final period.
Steve Draper and Alex Sweitzer had 18 points apiece to lead the Appleknockers. Robby Lehr added 9 points, Bo Gearhart 8 and Gage Wright 2.
Waltonville 77, Cobden 66: Lehr had 27 points to lead Cobden Monday, Dec. 28.
Draper added 18 points, Sweitzer 12, Gearhart 4, J.C. Chapman 3 and Josh Aspen 2.
The Spartans built a commanding 25-10 first quarter advantage before Cobden fought back in the second quarter to pull to 39-35 at the half. Waltonville led 55-50 going into the final period.
Cobden 56, Zeigler Royalton 48: Lehr scored 30 points to power Cobden to the opening game win Saturday, Dec. 26.
Draper and Sweitzer added 10 points apiece, Allan Brumleve 4 and Gearhart 2.
The Tornadoes led 14-9 after one quarter. The Appleknockers fought back to pull ahead 28-24 at the half. Cobden led 38-35 going into the final period.
The Appleknockers were 21 of 40 in shot attempts from the floor, 1 of 5 from 3-point range and 11 of 18 from the free throw line.
Cobden, 7-5, is scheduled to play Saturday.
