Cobden, Shawnee fall in regional play
Cobden and Shawnee each from the Class 1A high school girls’ basketball regional tournament in Goreville Tuesday, Feb. 7.
Following are game summaries:
Goreville 61, Cobden 34: The Lady Blackcats built an insurmountable first quarter lead on their way to the win.
Goreville led 19-7 after one quarter and 34-12 at halftime. The Appleknockers trailed 51-27 after three periods.
Bekah Russell scored 20 points to lead Cobden. Devyn Inman added 4 points, Laurelin Pitts and Katie Mowell 3 each and Haley Tomazzoli and Audrey Millis 2 each.
Russell and Mowell will be the only seniors graduating from this year’s Appleknocker squad.
Cobden finishes its season at 17-10 overall.
Goreville advanced with a 25-2 record.
Century 55, Shawnee 33: Shawnee remained within striking distance until the third quarter in the loss.
The Lady Centurions led 18-14 after one quarter and 37-24 at halftime. Century outscored Shawnee 12-4 in the third quarter to build a 49-28 lead heading into the final period.
Taylor Loveless scored 9 points to lead the Lady Reds. Bethany McMahan added 7 points, Haley Murphy 6, Jordan Johnson 5, Sanni Ahokas 4 and Elena Houston 2.
Shawnee finishes at 15-11 overall. Murphy and Jessie Reynolds, who had season-ending knee surgery, will be the only seniors graduating from this year’s team.
