Cobden takes third at Carterville tourney

The Cobden High School girls’ basketball team finished in third place with a 2-2 record at last week’s Carterville Winter Classic.

The Applekockers’ Bekah Russell was named to the all-tournament team.

Cobden 53, Steeleville 40: Russell scored 18 points to lead Cobden to the third place victory in the late game Saturday, Jan. 14.

Ashley Millis added 13 points for Cobden. Devyn Inman and Haley Tomazzoli had 8 points apiece, Laurelin Pitts 4 and Brenda Carmona 2.

The game was tied 11-11 after one quarter. The Lady Warriors were ahead 20-17 at the half. The Appleknockers made an 18-6 run in the third period to pull ahead 35-26 going into the final period.

Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher 62, Cobden 35: First place ZRC pulled ahead 14-8 after one quarter on its way to the win in an earlier game Saturday, Jan. 14.

The Lady Tornadoes were ahead 33-23 at the half and 46-27 after three quarters.

Russell had 14 points to lead the Appleknockers. Tomazzoli added 7 points, Sandra Hartline and Millis had 6 each and Inman added 2.

Cobden 49, Johnston City 30: Russell led the way with 16 points in the classic win Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Tomazzoli added 15 points, Millis 9, Inman 5 and Katie Mowell and Hartline 2 apiece.

Cobden led 9-6 after one quarter but fell behind 23-22 at the half. The Appleknockers made a 15-2 scoring run in the third quarter to build a 37-25 lead after three periods.

Cobden, 11-8, is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at Joppa.
