Cobden wins, Shawnee falls Tuesday in 1A regional play
Cobden won and Shawnee lost in second-round action at the Class 1A high school boys’ basketball regional tournament at Meridian Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Following are game summaries:
Cobden 48, Century 39: Alex Sweitzer had 17 points to boost Cobden to the upset of No. 3 seeded Century.
Robby Lehr added 13 points for the Appleknockers. Steve Draper had 9 points, Bo Gearhart 7 and Allan Brumleve 2.
The Appleknockers led 15-9 after one quarter and 24-23 at the half. The Pharaohs tied the game 31-31 headed into the final quarter.
Cobden outscored the Centurions 17-8 in the last period on its way to the win.
Cobden advanced with a 15-11 record.
Goreville 61, Shawnee 44: The Redskins couldn’t overcome the first quarter scoring drought in the loss.
The Blackcats led 19-5 after one quarter and 34-18 at the half. Goreville led 44-29 going into the last period.
Tyler Davis had 13 points to lead Shawnee. Tyler Brant added 11 points, Kyle Griggs 9, Kyle Stevens 4, Greg Smith 3 and Andrew Livesay and Adam Pennington 2 apiece.
Shawnee finished its seson at 8-19.
Goreville plays Cobden Thursday, today, at 7:30 p.m. The winner plays Wednesday’s winner between Meridian and Cairo for the regional championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
