Cobden wins, Shawnees loses in holiday tournament action

Cobden won and Shawnee lost in opening-round action of the Sesser-Valier high school boys’ basketball tournament Saturday, Dec. 26.

Following are game summaries:

Cobden 56, Zeigler-Royalton 48: Robby Lehr  had 30 points to boost Cobden to the win.

Steve Draper and Alex Sweitzer added 10 points apiece for the Appleknockers. Allan Brumleve chipped in 4 points and Bo Gearhart 2.

The Tornadoes led 14-9 after one quarter. The Appleknockers fought back to pull ahead 28-24 at the half. Cobden led 38-35 going into the final period.

Woodlawn 53, Shawnee 43: The Cardinals led 11-9 after one quarter and 27-19 at the half. Woodlawn led 40-33 going into the final period.

Tyler Davis and Ty McMahan had 13 points apiece to lead the Redskins. Tyler Brant added 9 points and Kyle Griggs and Kyle Stevens 4 apiece.

Cobden, 7-3, was scheduled to play Waltonville, 8-1, in winners’ bracket action.

Shawnee was scheduled to play Christopher in losers’ bracket action earlier this week. The tournament was to conclude on Wednesday.
