County board covers wide range of issues at Tuesday meeting

The Union County Board of Commissioners covered a wide range of issues at this week’s regular meeting.

The meeting was Tuesday afternoon at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Paula Stairs, representing Shawnee Development Council’s Union County office in Anna, said the agency was very busy in the community during 2009.

Stairs said the Union County office handled 99 weatherization program applications and 1,405 applications for energy assistance.

She said Retired Senior Volunteer Program participants logged more than 61,000 hours of time which they donated.

In other business at this week’s meeting:

The commissioners were asked to consider approval of a project labor agreement which would cover Union County projects. Representatives of several Southern Illinois labor unions attended Tuesday’s meeting. The labor agreement is designed to ensure that Southern Illinois workers get jobs on construction projects.

A resident of the Lingle Creek Road area south of Jonesboro voiced concerns about the condition and safety of the road. County officials noted that work has been done on the road in recent years, including the replacement of two bridges.

The commissioners approved a budget for the regional office of education.

The commissioners approved a proposal for the Union County Ambulance Service to obtain a new photocopier and computer equipment through a lease purchase with T & I Office Equipment in Anna.
