County hosts successful surplus property auction

An auction sale of Union County surplus property turned out very well, even though weather for the event was less than ideal.

The auction was held Saturday, Jan. 22, on the grounds of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Saturday was very cold. Light snow flurries could be seen as the auction began shortly after 10 a.m. (The event lasted until about 1 p.m.) A cold wind added to the chill of the day.

More than 100 potential bidders registered for the event, which was conducted by 3D Auctions of Anna. Carl Dillow was auctioneer.

Union County engineer Kevin Grammer said the auction generated $47,000.  Proceeds will go to the county highway department.

A large metal building was sold at the auction to a local buyer. The building currently is used by the highway department. The buyer is required to remove the structure by March 15.

The building is being removed in conjunction with the construction of a new county courthouse.
