Dedication ceremony for new courthouse tentatively scheduled
A dedication ceremony for Union County's new courthouse tentatively is planned for Saturday, May 11, 2013.
The tentative plans were announced in the latest update on the construction of the county's new courthouse in Jonesboro.
The update was presented at a meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners held last Friday morning. The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.
The update was presented to the board by construction manager Mike Smith.
Along with the tentative plans for a dedication ceremony, other highlights from the update follow:
Nov. 30 marked the 300th day of construction at the new courthouse.
The Union County Sheriff's Office was scheduled to begin moving into the lower level of the courthouse, an office at a time, on Monday.
The county 911 system will switch control from the old building to the new facility when wiring has been completed.
Offices in the old courthouse now are slated to begin moving into the new building late in January.
Demolition of the old courthouse, the 911/sheriff's office and three neighboring houses is scheduled to begin in February.
Courtrooms have been installed.
The fire sprinkler system has received critical components that control the flow of water from tanks to the fire pump. Installation was completed and a successful test was run on Nov. 20.
All elevators have been certified and turned over to the county.
The Union County circuit clerk's office continues to move files and equipment from the old building to the new facility.
