Incidents investigated at Ware

Authorities continue to investigate a residential fire and reported incidents of rocks striking a mobile home in the Ware community. No injuries have been reported.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay said that authorities have not been able to determine if the incidents are connected, but they still have people in the community concerned.

A fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at a mobile home on Elm Drive in Ware. Livesay said the fire destroyed the Daniel Hancock residence. Three people in the mobile home escaped without injury.

The Ware-Wolf Lake and Jonesboro fire departments responded to the scene of the blaze. The sheriff said the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the incident.

The mobile home where the fire happened is reported to have been hit by rocks on numerous times prior to last Thursday's fire, the sheriff said.

Rocks reportedly struck the residence on at least eight occasions. Rocks of the size of those found in driveways were striking the mobile home. Such action would be considered as criminal damage to property.

Livesay said that authorities had not been able to determine whether the rocks were being thrown or launched by some sort of instrument.

"We can't determine where the rocks are coming from," the sheriff said.

The mobile home was reported to have been struck by rocks late Wednesday night, Jan. 11, just prior to the fire.

A travel trailer which was moved onto the property where the mobile home was located was reported to have been hit by rocks last Thursday.

Livesay said the area was heavily patrolled over the weekend.

Even with the presence of law enforcement personnel, windows in the travel trailer which had been moved to the site were broken Saturday night, the sheriff said.

The Union County Sheriff's Office has been joined by the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Union County Drug Task Force and the Jonesboro Police Department in an investigation of the incidents involving the rocks.
