A-J boys’ basketball wins season opener

t the buzzer to lift Anna-Jonesboro to a 49-47 win over Carmi-White County in first-round action of the Harrisburg Invitational high school boys’ basketball tournament Monday, Nov. 28.

With the game tied 47-47, A-J took a time out with 7 seconds remaining to set up the final play. Caleb Mixen then fired a pass to Wright for the game-winning basket.

The Wildcats trailed 10-4 after one quarter and 21-14 at the half. A-J was behind  36-29 going into the last quarter and outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

“We didn’t play well the first half, but we came back and played pretty well the second half,” A-J coach Mike Chamness said. “We’ve got that first game jitters behind us now. We’re playing a bunch of guys who haven’t played much varsity.”

The Wildcats were 6 of 20 from 2-point range, 5 of 15 from 3-point range and 18 of 22 from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs were 18 of 28 from 2-point range, 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 2 of 5 from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats, 1-0, were to have played host Harrisburg on Wednesday in second-round action of the tournament. A-J continues in tourney action at 6 p.m. Friday against Hamilton County and finishes at noon Saturday against Goreville.
