A-J defeats Cobden

Travis Smith opened the game with a 3-pointer to lead host Anna-Jonesboro to a 9-0 unanswered run on its way to a 64-45 win over county rival Cobden in non-conference high school boys’ basketball Monday, Dec. 6.

The Wildcats led 21-7 after one quarter behind a 3-pointer apiece by Brady Wright and Cody Livesay.

Chad Mayes and Smith added another 3-pointer each as A-J built a 31-17 halftime lead.

Sandwiched around a 3-pointer by Smith, the Wildcats went on a 9-point unanswered run early in the third quarter to put the game away.

The Wildcats led 48-27 headed into the final period.

Wright led the way for A-J with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Livesay added 13 points. Tylor Duckworth had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Smith had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Alex LeFevre had 4 points and Mayes 3.

Rob Lehr had 22 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Appleknockers. Bo Gearhart added 7 points and 4 rebounds. J.C. Chapman had 4 points, Garrett Marks, Tyler Lewey and R.G. Millis 3 apiece, Josh Aspen 2 and Nathan Sweitzer 1.

A-J was 18 of 33 in shot attempts from the field, 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 10 of 18 from the free throw line.

The Appleknockers were 13 of 30 in shot attempts from the floor, 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 10 of 13 from the charity stripe.

A-J, 4-1, plays at Pinckneyville Friday and battles Meridian Saturday in the Cobden Shootout.

Cobden, which fell to 1-4 overall, is scheduled to play at home against Dongola Friday and in its own Shootout Saturday.
