A-J girls finish third at Benton tourney
Chandra Parr scored 15 points to lead Anna-Jonesboro to a 53-51 win over host Benton for third place in the 2009 Rangerette Christmas Classic high school girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Parr was named to the all-tournament team.
Valerie Pender added 11 points for the Lady Wildcats. Emma Basler chipped in 10 points, Rachel Hadyen 8, Destiny Dillow 6 and Jesse Stone 3.
A-J led 14-8 after one quarter and 26-18 at the half. The Lady Wildcats led 41-30 going into the final period. The Lady Rangerettes made a 21-12 scoring surge in the final quarter but were held off by A-J in their come-from-behind bid.
“We were lucky to get out of there with a win,”
A-J coach George Lenon said. “But we were happy with third place.”
A-J 53, Elverado 19: Hayden scored 17 points to lead the Lady Wildcats to the win Monday, Dec. 28.
Basler, Parr and Dillow had 8 points apiece, Pender and Taylor Atkins 4 each and Rebecca Mitchell and Stone 2 apiece.
The Lady Wildcats were ahead 16-4 after one quarter and 23-11 at the half.
A-J was 15 of 39 in shot attempts form the floor, 5 of 18 from 3-point range and 4 of 10 from the free throw line.
A-J, which finished 3-1 in the tourney and improved to 5-10 overall, is scheduled to play today, Thursday, at home against Carterville.
