A-JCHS students receive honors at Scholastic Art Awards exhibition

<p class="p1">Anna-Jonesboro Community High School students entered over 80 pieces of art in the 41st installment of the Scholastic Art Awards exhibition.</p><p class="p1">The exhibition was scheduled to open at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon on Sunday, Jan. 18. </p><p class="p1">Cedarhurst is the Southern Illinois affiliate of the Scholastic Art Awards,  which is a juried student art competition that draws hundreds of entries each year. </p><p class="p1">Works of the top award recipients from the regional program are sent to New York for the national competition.</p><p class="p1">The contest is open to students in 7th through 12th grades in 28 Southern Illinois counties.</p><p class="p1">Entries for this year’s competition were submitted from junior and senior high school art departments from Anna-Jonesboro, Belleville, Benton, Carbondale, Carterville, Harrisburg, Herrin, Johnston City, Joppa, Marion, Mt. Carmel, Mt. Vernon, Unity Point and Vienna.</p><p class="p1">Seniors were allowed to enter a portfolio of eight works. </p><p class="p1">The exhibition features a variety of categories,  including but not limited to drawing, painting, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, glass, photography, graphic design and fabric art.  </p><p class="p1">Thirteen students from A-JCHS had works admitted into the display.  </p><p class="p1">A-JCHS art instructor Tina Vancil shared that she was “extremely proud” of each of her students.</p><p class="p1">Out of 562 individual works and 21 portfolios from 15 schools that entered in the competition, 193 individual works and six portfolios were chosen.</p><p class="p1">A-JCHS students whose works were admitted into the display, the title of their entry and  honors they received follow:</p><p class="p1">Levite Biddle: drawing and illustration, “Cruising At A Glance,” honorable mention. Art portfolio, “Levite Biddle,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Dakota Butler: mixed media, “Inspiration,” honorable mention. </p><p class="p1">Sara Currie: mixed media, “Nostalgia,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Mason Delashmutt: photography, “Malicious,” honorable mention. Art portfolio, “My Point of View,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Kirsten Flick: drawing and illustration, “Tae,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Kiersten Goines: photography, “Family is Forever,” gold key.</p><p class="p1">Jamie Hammond: drawing and illustration, “Frances Bean Cobain,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Susannah Hayward: drawing and illustration, “Double Jointed,” gold key. Photography, “Flying High, Navy Pier, Chicago,” honorable mention. Photography, “Mogli the Cow, Cobden,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Kami Hinkle: ceramics and glass, “The Twins,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Taylor Newman: mixed media, “America,” silver key.</p><p class="p1">Emily Rogers: mixed media, “Twisted Tree,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Sophie Shaffar: drawing and illustration, “ERROR,” honorable mention. Sculpture, “Completely Irrelephant,” honorable mention.</p><p class="p1">Bailey Sterns: art portfolio, “The Life of Bailey,” honorable mention. </p><p class="p1">More than 730 works of art from Southern Illinois students were entered in this year’s contest.</p><p class="p1">The exhibition will be open to the public in the Mitchell Museum Main Gallery and the Beal Corridor Gallery through Sunday, Feb. 15. </p><p class="p1">An awards ceremony is scheduled at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the performance hall at Cedarhurst.</p><p class="p1">Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is located on Richview Road in Mt. Vernon. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.</p>
