Jimmy Drew transfers to DePaul University

Former Anna-Jonesboro High School athlete Jimmy Drew has been granted a transfer waiver by the NCAA and is eligible to play basketball for DePaul University in Chicago this week.

“Jimmy has been working hard since the start of practice and into the season while the appeal process with the NCAA has been on going,” DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright said in a press release.

“Doug Baker in our compliance office has been working on this and it’s great to see Jimmy get an opportunity to play right away.”

Drew played his first two years of collegiate basketball at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau before transferring to DePaul this season.

He totaled 51 career games with 16 starts for the Indians.

As a sophomore in 2007-08, he averaged 4.2 points per game.

He ranked 8th in the Ohio Valley Conference with a team-best .403 3-point shooting percentage. Drew missed the 2008-09 season with an injury.

The NCAA granted Drew the immediate waiver of the transfer rule based on extenuating circumstances at Southeast Missouri State.

As a walk-on for the Blue Demon squad, the 6-4 junior will be eligible for the remainder of this season and the 2010-11 season.

Drew, who was all-conference, All-South and All-State in high school basketball, averaged 23.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while totaling 94 3-pointers his senior season at A-J.

He also quarterbacked the A-J football team and was an All-State honoree.

His sister Kassie, a standout basketball player at A-J, played collegiate basketball for the University of Missouri.
