Lady Wildcats defeat Cobden, Carterville

Kim Mixen scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to power visiting Anna-Jonesboro to a 62-29 win over Cobden in non-conference high school girls’ basketball action Saturday, Jan. 7.

Jessi Stone added 13 points for the Lady Wildcats. Brooke Chamness scored 10 points, Natty Hepburn 6, Val Pender and Balyie Denny 5 each, Krista Pender 4 and Katie Grant and Sammy Brimm 2 each.

Bekah Russell scored 12 points to lead the Appleknockers. Haley Tomazzoli scored 10, Katie Mowell 3 and Ashley Millis and Audrey Sirles 2 each.

The Lady Wildcats, who built an early 11-0 lead, were ahead 13-2 at the end of one quarter. A-J led 35-14 at halftime and 47-22 going into the final period.

Cobden fell to 9-6 overall.

A-J 58, Carterville 38:

Stone netted 20 points to lead A-J over visiting Carterville in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference play  Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Mixen added 13 points for the Lady Wildcats. Erica Friebel scored 11 points, Val Pender 9, Grant 3 and Chamness 2.

The Lady Wildcats led 16-11 after one quarter and 30-22 at halftime. A-J led 41-30 going into the final period.

The win avenged a previous loss to the Lady Lions at the Benton Invitational.

A-J, which improved to 8-11 overall, is 2-2 in the conference. The Lady Wildcats will play Thursday, today, at home against Herrin.
