Lindsey Rae Writes The Day: I Will Not Feel Guilty for Having a Valentine

Every Valentine’s Day, you have that one friend that is single and complains about all the sappiness that has filled the air around them on Valentine’s Day. Frankly, the way society has been, some people in a relationship feel that way too. How many sitcom episodes have been about a person that is alone on Valentine’s Day and they just happen to find the love of their life in time to celebrate, or their friends in relationships stop everything they are doing just to be with that “lonely” person.

It appears to me (you are more than welcome to disagree) that the “attack” of Valentine’s Day isn’t on the single people this year…it’s on the one’s who have a Valentine. TV stations have advertised “UnValentine’s Day” or “Anti-Valentine’s Day Weekend.” I’ve seen so many articles on what to do if you’re by yourself on Valentine’s Day and what you could be spending your money on while your friends spends money on flowers, chocolates and jewelry. The lack of enthusiasm has almost made me feel guilty for having a Valentine.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t make you feel guilty, regardless of your relationship status. It should remind you to remind others around you how much you love them.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is a day of love. But who says that love is to be celebrated only by those who are in a romantic relationship? My parents, every year, give me some kind of chocolate or card, give me a big hug and say Happy Valentine’s Day, I love you. That means the world to me. But I am also going to celebrate with my boyfriend. Though we do the classic go out to dinner and see a movie, it has truly become our tradition. We also discuss those moments in our life when we first met and remind ourselves of our first memories together. We also discuss past movies we have seen on Valentine’s Day. Some have been great; others have sucked (Ghostrider 2. Don’t ever see it.)

So this Valentine’s Day, don’t feel guilty if you have a Valentine and don’t feel lonely if you aren’t in a relationship. There is someone else that you love or care for that doesn’t have someone to celebrate a traditional Valentine’s Day with that you can show your appreciation for.

I personally would like to say Happy Valentine’s Day to my Valentine and I’m blessed to have spent so many of them together.

P.S. I can’t wait to see my Facebook status blow up with engagement photos.
