Louis Augustus Joseph Jenkinson

Louis Augustus Joseph Jenkinson, of Cobden, and formerly of Muncie, Ind., died on Jan. 18, 2013, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1914, the son of Joseph and Alma Parcher Jenkinson, in Muncie, Ind. They preceded him in death.

He was married for 76 years to Drexal Creviston Jenkinson. They were married on June 4, 1937. She preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Roger (Janet) Jenkinson, Rebecca Jenkinson (Larry) Boyce and Kathryn Jenkinson VanOosting; five grandchildren, Eric (Heather) Jenkinson, Peter (Theshia) VanOosting, Thomas VanOosting, Samantha (Brandon) Baird and Elizabeth Boyce; seven great-grandchildren, Haley, Jacob, Abigail, D.J., Riley, Maya and Nicholas; three sisters, Agnes, Bernice and Dorothy; one brother, Edward; nieces, nephews and Jane Kelley and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife; by his brothers, George, John, Lawrence and Richard; and a sister Mary Catherine.

He attended St. Lawrence Catholic School. He graduated from Muncie Central High School. He worked as a blacksmith and was taught the trade by his grandfather. He and his grandfather made some of the iron fence surrounding the Ball Brothers’ homes in Muncie, Ind. He also worked at Ball Brothers Corporation with his father learning tool and die machining.

He was a postal worker for 30 years. He always worked two jobs, one at the USPS and another as a machine repairman for Creviston Steel Corporation. After retiring from the USPS, he worked at Design Inc. until moving to Anna.

During the summer months he assisted John Creviston on the farm. He liked gardening for many years.

He attended Cowan Christian Church in Cowan, Ind., High Street Methodist Church in Muncie, Ind., and joined the Anna Methodist Church when he moved to Anna in 1995. He was a member of a barbershop quartet and a square dance group in Muncie, and a member of the Cowan Lions Club in Indiana. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels in Anna.

He was always busy helping his children. He practiced any kind of ball with his son and grandchildren. He built play equipment and pulled sleds with the tractor he had made. He was an avid game player and taught card games to the children. He liked to somehow figure out a way to make anything work. He created “jigs” for many projects, and was an amateur photographer all of his life.

Donations can be made in his memory to a local food pantry, PAWS, a no-kill animal shelter, or time can be donated to the tutoring of children or helping senior citizens.

Private family services will be held at a later date in Muncie, Ind.
