Meridian, Cairo win at 1A regional
Host Meridian and Cairo each won in opening-round action at the Class 1A high school boys’ basketball regional tournament Monday, Feb. 22.
Following are game summaries:
Meridian 112, Dongola 51: Darian Engram had 20 points to lead the Bobcats to the win.
Brent Kennedy and DaVante McClung had 16 points apiece, Cameron Ballard 12, Timmy Hackney 10, Brandon Madison 9, Jeffery Dickson 6 and Lauren Terry, Joshua Jones and Gregory Nesby 4 apiece.
Tyler Eddleman had 21 points to lead the Demons. Chris Cohin added 16 points, Tyler Thompson 8 and Clay Harris 6.
The Bobcats led 25-9 after one quarter and 54-20 at the half.
Dongola finished at 2-26. Meridian advanced with a 26-1 record.
Cairo 87, Egyptian 70: Lee Wright scored 26 points to lead the Pilots to the win.
Devin Mayfield added 17 points, Arthur Williams 16, Demetrius Hill 11, Rodney Woodson 10, Dominique Halder 4 and Jalen Childs 3.
Jhermarien Terry had 16 points to lead the Pharaohs. Darmez Newson had 11 points, Marcus Marable 10, Matt Petermichael and Lamont Toots 9 apiece, Rayshaun Woodson 7, Devonte Price 5 and Keyonte Woodson 2.
Cairo led 22-21 at the end of one quarter. Egyptian came back to pull ahead 44-43 at the half. The Pilots went on a 27-14 run to take a 70-58 lead into the final period.
Egyptian finished at 16-11. Cairo advanced with a 14-13 record.
