National Drug, Alcohol Facts Week presentations given to students at A-JCHS

The Fellowship House Prevention staff, Teresa Goddard and Mandy Hazel, recently gave presentations in Kristin Chamness’s freshmen health classes at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

The presentations were made in conjunction with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, which was Jan. 25-31.

Students took the National Drug and Alcohol Facts IQ challenge. After each student took the challenge, the answers were discussed and additional information and facts were shared.

Following the challenge, the students participated in an activity called “Fumble Fingers.”

The activity simulated the effect that any kind of drug can have on the body by slowing down its functions which made it more difficult to complete certain tasks. The use of gloves and spinning three times in a circle were used to create this effect before participating in the activity.

In today’s world, teens are bombarded with inaccurate information. The media glamorizes substance use: In song lyrics, magazines, television, movies, social media sites, just to name a few.

By providing accurate information on the impact that drugs and alcohol can have on their bodies, The Fellowship House Prevention staff hopes to “shatter the myths” one classroom at a time through prevention services which are provided in most of the schools in Union and Massac counties.

Upon concluding the event, preventionists Goddard and Hazel thanked each student for taking part in National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week. They presented each student with a flash drive that had The Fellowship House Campaign’s 2smart2start logo on it.

Funding for the presentations was provided in whole or in part by the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

For more information about prevention programs, call The Fellowship House at 833-4456 or 833-4460.
