A new year begins

A new year has begun, and 2011 should be an exciting year in Union County.

The new year will bring with it even more progress on the construction of a much-needed new courthouse for Union County. County officials met again this week with architects who are working on the project, and it shouldn't be too long before we get an idea of how the new building will look.

The new year also brings with it municipal and school board elections in Union County communities. Many of our friends and neighbors have stepped forward and shown a willingness to serve. This is especially important as local governments and school districts work to meet the challenges of making every resource count.

The new year also will bring with it the return of Union County traditions, including the Cobden Peach Festival and the Union County Fair.

On a more somber note, this year also will bring with it the 10th anniversary of the national tragedy which unfolded on September 11, 2001.

We look forward to what 2011 brings with it, here at home, throughout the nation and around the world.
