Newpaper: hot topic

The inevitable appears to have happened. The Gazette-Democrat became the topic of postings on Topix Anna IL Forum.

Topix is a social media Internet outlet that provides a forum for just about any community of any size throughout the nation. Frequently its postings appear in an "attack" mode, targeting people, businesses or government leaders and agencies. So it came as no surprise to the newspaper staff that an increase in the cost of the paper drew the ire of one reader.

What was surprising, and gratifying, were the responses to the post. Here's the initial exchange:

Really... 1.00 for a crappy paper that isn't worth .50...It is sad when Repperts can up the price of a paper higher then we pay for a Southern...Wow..I won't buy anymore , that stupidity for that paper when there is nothing in it and they never print anything right as it is.

First of all, the Gazette Democrat is a wonderful publication of local happenings of church and family. They employ many local people to support union county businesses and schools. The Repperts have always supported this county in various ways. Community minded is always a concern and goal. If Reppert Publication raised its price to $1.00, I say it is well worth it for the reader, the advertiser, the family, the local economy and not to mention the news that pertains to us! Anna News! The Gazette Democrat provides a valuable service every week. Support a business that has supported this community for generations. Subscribe to your local newspaper, it is written and published for you, by the local people, for the local people.

. Are you really comparing the Gazette Democrat to the Southern? In my opinion, and I am sure it is shared by many, the difference is, it is about them, NOT US! The Gazette Democrat is about the events and happenings in our local businesses and churches, family reunions and schools, birth announcements, death notices. All about Anna. You obviously don't value those important avenues as the publisher of the local publication does. When was the last time you read anything about Anna in the Southern? Crime reports? There is a lot more to Union County than crime. I would like to express my appreciation of our local editorial and reporters of the publication. You have always had our best interest at heart. I am one reader of many that truly appreciates your past, present and future issues of our local news. Thank you for your service to your community.

It seems the reading of a newspaper hasn't helped your sentence structure. Oh, that's right, you read the wrong one. You should try the local paper published in your hometown. It might surprise you. Just a thought!

The Southern is too concerned with cities along Route 13. If you aren't right along there, forget any sort of good coverage unless it's a really juicy news story.

I, for one, am glad we have a local paper. Some places don't anymore, and that's terrible! It keeps everyone around town informed on what's going on around Anna.

The Southern is more of a "regional" newspaper.....that is not locally owned. They do quite a bit more editorializing. Our local paper is concerned with things that take place in the county.......more of a "public service" type of publication. They don't appear (thankfully) to want to "make" news or stir the pot. Post the facts and move on.

I, for one, read it every week.

The Southern is owned by Lee enterprises,a conglomerate whom recently came out of bankruptcy. As any successful business does, they must adjust prices of their goods or services as cost rise or lower. I'm sure property taxes on the building went up,as probably cost of ink and paper. What about his labor cost. How about the fuel for the delivery vans? Repair cost for equipment is up.Our local paper is very valuable asset to our community. No it is not perfect, but i hope for all of us it stays available and independent forever! Long live The Gazette
