Home unit tours wetlands center

The Shawnee Unit of Illinois Association of Home and Community Education, IAHCE, recently toured the Henry N. Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center, which is located south of Cypress on Illinois Route 37 South.

IAHCE member Sue Johnson and her granddaughter Erica viewed the displays of material assembled and maintained at the Cache River Wetlands Center during the recent Shawnee Unit field trip. The chapter plans at least two group outings per year. While at the wetlands center, the group viewed several films about the Cache and its inhabitants.

While at the center, the group used one display area to stuff Anti-Ouch Pouches. The pattern for the pouches had been researched and made by Pulaski Unit member Martha McMunn and Friend of IAHCE Nita Hubbard. Pictured above are Sue Johnson, June Badgley, guest Jessica Wright, Anna Doardi and Alice Mae Mathis, who filled filled the underarm hanging pillows with fiberfill in order to provide a comfortable cushion for hospital patients who are recovering from breast surgery. For more information about the Anti-Ouch Pouches, call unit chairperson June Badgley 618-634-2367. Groups which may be interested in learning more about the wetlands center can call Molly at 618-657-2064.
