Jonesboro man sentenced

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds reported Aug. 4 that James L. Smith, 31, of Jonesboro, has been sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Smith was sentenced after admitting to a petition for revocation of conditional discharge for an original offense of domestic battery, which is a Class 4 felony.

Smith will also serve a four-year term of mandatory supervised release (formerly parole).

Smith was arrested in January 2016 following an investigation by Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Smith pleaded guilty to the original charge in April 2016.

In January, a warrant was issued for his arrest for failing to appear and he was subsequently arrested in May.

A petition for revocation of conditional discharge was filed in May after he committed a new offense during April in Jackson County.
