New village hall under construction in Tamms

The Village of Tamms is constructing a new village hall which is situated next to the post office on Front Street.

Village hall is currently in the Historical Tamms Depot, also on Front Street. Village hall has been in the depot since 1986, according to lib.niu.edu.

Tamms Village Board member Clark Short said it was easier and will cost less money to build a new structure compared to the cost of repairing the depot.

"You can feel the floors buckling when you walk in," Short said about the current facility.

He said it would cost over $100,000 to repair the depot.

The new building will be bigger than the depot and the village wants to complete construction before winter.

The depot is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A meeting about the future of the depot is planned for Thursday, July 28, at 6 p.m. at the Tamms Community Building. The meeting is open to the public.
