Malone honored as Shawnee's outstanding faculty member

Shawnee Community College near Ullin has announced that the 2016 Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member is Sherrie Malone of Villa Ridge. The award recognizes the high achievement of Illinois’ Community College instructors. Malone received her associate of science degree at Shawnee Community College in 1989. She received a bachelor of science degree in secondary education, with a major in business education, at Southeast Missouri State University in 1991, when she graduated magna cum laude.

Malone earned a master of science degree in workforce education and development, with an emphasis in computer-based training, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2002, when she graduated summa cum laude. She also has completed 18 graduate hours in economics. Malone's teaching career started at the Regional Adult Education Program in Cairo as a computer instructor from 1991 to 1998. In the fall of 1998, she joined Shawnee Community College family as a full-time instructor. In her 18 years of teaching at the college, Malone has simultaneously taught finance, computers and economics. Along with her teaching responsibilities, Malone is involved in numerous professional organizations. Her memberships have included leadership positions. Her membership activities include the Illinois Education Association (1998 to present); Southern Illinois Business Education Association, SIBEA, member (2008 to present), SIBEA treasurer (2010-2012), SIBEA affiliate representative to the IBEA board (2012 to present), SIBEA secretary (2015 to present). Illinois Business Education Association (IBEA) member (2009 to present), IBEA representative to the IBEA board (2012 to present), IBEA registration co-chairperson (2013 to present); and a National Business Education Association member (2013 to present).

Malone has received a a wide range of honors and awards during her teaching career. That recognition has included: Regional Adult Education Program teacher of the year (1993-1994), Shawnee Community College Student Services outstanding faculty of the year (2013), Southern Illinois Business Education Association teacher of the year (2014), Illinois Business Education Association post-secondary teacher of the year (2015), and Shawnee Community College Faculty of the Year (2016).

Malone and her husband, David, have been married 25 years. They have three children, Jenna, Tayler and Aryn. Jenna and Tayler are students at Shawnee Community College, where they are pursuing degrees in nursing and business. During a recent interview with Shawnee Community College marketing coordinator Katie Armstrong, Malone identified her “ability to motivate students to think positive about their future” as one of her personal strengths in teaching. “The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students achieve their career goals," Malone said. "I motivate my students by giving them positive affirmations about their work every time I speak to them. I try to build them up so that no matter what, they will never quit or give up on their educational goals." In her "Philosophy of Teaching," Malone describes herself as a “facilitator of learning, not just a teacher.” Malone said that she "believes in creating an active learning environment to engage her students, all while being enthusiastic and positive for student learning."
