Elvira Martha Lampe Althoff
Elvira Martha Lampe Althoff, a resident of Cairo since 1945, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at 4:55 p.m. at the home of her daughter in Indianapolis, Ind., at the age of 98.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1919, in St. Louis, the daughter of Henry William and Martha Helen Mueller Lampe.
She was preceded in death on Aug. 22, 1986, by her husband, Erwin Edward Althoff, who was born on Sept. 22, 1906. They were married on Nov. 3, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro.
Confirmed at the Church of St. Cecilia in St. Louis, she was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Olmsted and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cairo and was active in LutherAnns.
Other memberships included the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary for over 55 years. During World War II she worked for Anheuser-Busch Munitions. She also worked for Brown Shoe Company and JC Penney warehouses, both in St. Louis, then in Cairo worked at McKesson Drug Company and Elias Family Center. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
She was the mother of Sharon (Richard) Peterson of Indianapolis and Charles Althoff of Cairo; grandmother of Matthew Peterson, Lyn Peterson (Eric March), Anne Marie Peterson Turan (Jason), Cara Althoff (Shane Pribble), Whitney E. Althoff, and Corey E. Althoff (Julie Sharp); 11 great-grandchildren; the sister-in-law of Lillian Lampe; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Harry J. (Gladys) Lampe, Albert W. Lampe, Msgr. Irvin S. Lampe, Mildred R. (Leonard) Gildehaus and George (Bertie) Lampe.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Olmsted. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastor E. James Rivett. Burial will follow in Mound City National Cemetery.
