JoAnn Phillips Wahlstrom

JoAnn Phillips Wahlstrom, 92, of Salem, died on Nov. 9, 2017, at her home.

She was born on July 19, 1925, in McClure, the daughter of Romyn B. Phillips and Dorothy B. Brown Phillips.

She married Keith Wahlstrom on June 11, 1958. They were united in marriage by Dr. Robert Stewart of the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton.

Her life was rich by many blessings. Before her marriage she was the president of the Lutheran Organization at Southeast Missouri College in Cape Girardeau. Later she worked as a hostess at a resort (Idlewild) in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and was the office manager at Shady Lane, a dining and summer playhouse near Belvidere and was president of the Belvidere Teachers Association. After she married Keith she was a member of the Pink Lady Auxiliary at Salem Hospital and a member of the Salem Woman’s Club.

She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State College, majoring in biology and mathematics. She taught high school classes at numerous schools, including Cobden, Belvidere, Wheaton, Salem, Memphis, Tenn., and Greenfield, Ohio.

Keith was a manufacturer representative, and during the summer months, she would travel with him. JoAnn and Keith were always together, sharing many of the same interests. She loved all her students, farming, dogs and reading many scientific issues. Her great love was her family, her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews.

She leaves behind her husband, Keith Wahlstrom of Salem; two brothers, Kenneth (Barbara) Phillips of McClure and Don Phillips of Shobonier; brothers-in-law Ed Vogl of Rockford and Merle Abercrombie of Red Bud; nieces Rene (David) Day of Memphis, Tenn., Sheila (Douglas) Dorsey of Town and Country, Mo., Kristi (Brian) Rowan of Olive Branch, Miss., Gretchen (Daryll) Bunch of Jonesboro and Candee (Rob) McMahan of Wonder Lake; nephews Dr. Kenneth (Emily) Phillips of Cape Girardeau, Kirk (Lee) Phillips of Shelbyville, Ky., Clay Phillips of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kyle (Gretchen) Phillips of Oakland, Tyler (Christina) Abercrombie of Delavan, Bart (Theresa) Abercrombie of St. Louis, Thad (Darlene) Phillips of Patoka, Jon (Rhonda) Phillips of Shobonier, Bonn (Susan) Phillips of El Cerrito, Calif., David (Lynn) Vogl of DeKalb and Bob (Leda) Vogl of Rockford; numerous great-nieces and nephews; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Betty Abercrombie; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Phillips and Barbara Vogl.

Funeral services for JoAnn Phillips Wahlstrom were at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna, with Pastor Mark Hasty officiating. Interment was in the Anna City Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to Kornthal Church.
