Alvin ‘Bill’ Murray

Alvin “Bill” Murray, 91, of Alto Pass, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna. 

He was born on July 2, 1930, in Cobden, the son of Willie and Bertie Burnett Murray. 

He married Nadine Richardson on April 4, 1953, in Alto Pass. 

Mr. Murray is survived by his wife, Nadine Murray of Alto Pass; children Joel (Kelley) Murray, Rhoda Murray, and Suzi Murray, all of Alto Pass; grandchildren Kelsey (Chad) Goines, Emily Murray, Paden Murray, Hallie Murray-Duryea and Joel Acklin; great-grandchild Audrey Goines; sisters Betty Stegle of Anna and Bertie Green of Alabama; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Robert Murray, LaVern Highland, Melvin Murray, Donald Murray, Dorothy Burgess, Jimmy Murray, Charles Murray, Frankie Murray and Bobby Joe Murray. 

Mr. Murray worked for many years as an operating engineer for IUOE Local 318 in Marion until his retirement.  

He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and Cobden Masonic Lodge No. 466. 

He was fire chief in Alto Pass for 11 years and was a member of the Coal Belt Firefighters Association. He served for several years on the Alto Pass Village Board. He enjoyed auctions and drinking beer with his buddies. 

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Alto Pass, with the Rev. Davy Miller officiating. Masonic rites were conducted at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Interment was in the Alto Pass Cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard military honors team of Marion. 

Memorials can be made to the Alto Pass Fire Department or to the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.
