Bill Newton

Bill Newton, 70, of Goreville, and formerly of Cobden, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

Mr. Newton was born on Feb. 24, 1950, in Anna, the son of Byford and Verla Billingsley Newton.  

He graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1968. He retired from working for the Illinois Department of Transportation. 

He enjoyed cooking, attending sporting events, spending time with his friends, and especially cherished the time he spent with his girls.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 627 in Buncombe. 

Survivors include his four daughters and their families: Kandi Starkweather of Cave Creek, Ariz., and her daughter, Maci Wagley and her husband, Luis (their children, Payton and Saylor) and her son, Bayli Duff; Brandi Karnes and her husband, Jason of Herrin, and their children, Chance and Presli Karnes; Dusty Palmer and her husband, Donald of Pinckneyville, and their children, Dylln, Dustin and Daci; and Ashley Newton and her husband, Levi Lanpher of St. Louis and their daughter Leighton Lanpher. 

He is also survived by his brother, Buckshot Newton; two sisters, Dena Johnson and Rita Belcher; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Rodger Joe Newton.

Per his wishes, cremation rites were accorded at Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.  

His family held a graveside memorial service for family and friends on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Lick Creek.

Memorials can be made for the education of his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren and their success was of utmost importance to him. Memorials can be made to: Bill Newton Memorial Fund, 1413 Summer Dr., Herrin, Ill. 62948.

Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro was in charge of arrangements.
