Clifford E. ‘Bud’ Braden

Clifford E. “Bud” Braden, 97, of Cobden, died at 12:52 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1920, in Carbondale, the son of Clifford Everett Braden and Esther McElhana. He married Charlesetta Manning on Feb. 5, 1947.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. He served on the USS Brooklyn, USS South Dakota and the USS Europa. He returned to Cobden in 1945 and went into the cattle and orchard business with his uncle Lester Biggs. Mr. Braden bought the orchard and farm and continued to work until a few years ago.

He served on the People’s Shipping board, the Farm Bureau board, the Illinois Fruit Exchange board, the Union County Farm Labor board, the Delta Region advisory board and was past commander of American Legion Post. No. 259. He was quite the storyteller and enjoyed visiting with friends and sharing stories of people who lived and worked in Union County.

He is survived by his son, Charles E. (Deborah) Braden of Cobden; one grandson, Charli (Maria) Braden of Cobden; great-granddaughters Josi Lynn and Harleigh Ann Braden of Cobden; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlesetta, his parents and by his sister, Erminie Braden Sias of Michigan.

Funeral services for Mr. Braden were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Crain Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Larry Buckles officiating. Entombment followed in the Alto Pass Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the VFW’s Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 and the U.S. Navy honors team.

Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
