Dannie H. Chapman Jr.

Dannie H. Chapman Jr., 62, of Jonesboro, died Monday, June 27, 2016, at 10 p.m. at his home.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1953, in Indianapolis, Ind.  He was the third of four children born to the Rev. Dannie H. Chapman Sr. and Audrey Worthen Chapman.  He spent his childhood and much of his youth in Mattoon, prior to the family moving to Southern Illinois in 1970.

He married Laurie Dukes on Dec. 26, 1992, in Ozark.  He later married Carol Ann Whightsel on Oct. 17, 2015, in Mattoon.  She survives.

Other survivors include his son, Dannie A. Chapman of Vienna; two sisters,  Dianne (her husband, Steve) Watkins of rural Grantsburg and Theresa (her husband, Wayne) Bradley of Carrier Mills; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dannie Allen Chapman.

He was a 1971 graduate of the Pope County Community High School.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Orleck (DD886) and served from 1971 until his honorable discharge in 1975.

He was employed for 28 years by the U.S. Postal Service.  He worked primarily as a rural letter carrier for the Cobden Post Office, prior to his retirement in 2015.

He was a sports enthusiast and had served as an umpire for the Johnson County Youth League.  He was also an avid golfer and a member of the Union County Country Club.  

A memorial service honoring the life of Dannie H. Chapman Jr. was conducted Saturday, July 2, at 4 p.m. at Freedom Outreach Ministries, 5515 State Route 146 East, Vienna.  Pastor Tyler Owens officiated.  Military honors and a flag presentation ceremony were accorded.
