Deweese ‘Deb’ Scruggs

Deweese “Deb” Scruggs, 96, of Ullin, passed in her sleep at home with her family on Saturday, April 11, 2020.

She had been living with her daughter Carole Nafziger in Rockford for the last five years of her life.  

She was born in Collinsville, Ala., on Dec. 1, 1923, the daughter of Hubert and Birdie Keener.  

After graduating from high school she worked at the Anniston Alabama Army depot for the World War II effort.  

She met her husband James A. Scruggs (now deceased) at the Army depot.  They married and moved to Mound City, where they opened and ran an IGA supermarket for more than 40 years. She later moved to her country home near Ullin.  

She loved gardening and animals. She was a member of Cache Chapel Methodist Church. She was active in her church, women’s club, Red Hats and loved to travel. She was devoted to her four children.

She is survived by her four children, Carole Nafziger and her husband Lowell Nafziger of Rockford, James Scruggs and his wife Lou Ann Scruggs of York, Pa., Dr. Charles Scruggs of Galveston, Texas, and Dr. Jerry Scruggs and his wife Patricia of Memphis, Tenn. She also is survived by numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will host a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the New Cache Chapel Methodist Church, which is located on Shawnee College Road, Ullin.

Memorials can be made  to Cache Chapel Methodist Church in Ullin, to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ASPCA, or to Church Health (churchhealth.org).
