Ernest 'Speedy' Elder

Ernest “Speedy” Elder, 85, of Cobden, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion Community Living Center.  

He was born on Nov. 12, 1933, the son of David and Clara Robertson Elder. 

He married Chris Garan on Sept. 5, 1992, in Sherman Mills, Maine.

Mr. Elder is survived by his wife of 26 years, Chris Elder of Cobden; sons John (Stephanie) Elder of Arizona, Gene (Gabbie) Elder of Germany and Charles (Allison) Elder of Hew Hampshire; stepsons Michael (Jessica) Garan of Maine and Andrew (Stephanie) Garan of Maine; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace E. Garner of Cobden; two brothers, David E. (Tana) Elder of Peterburger and Raymond (Mary Ellen) Elder of Mattoon; many other relatives and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Kay Moreland-Thibodeau; and two sisters Rose Marie Sellars and Katherine Jane Ballance. 

He was a life member of Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the DAV. He was a member of the Anna Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge, and the Mason Lodge of Maine. He loved to go fishing, hunting, golfing and morrell mushroom hunting. 

He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years as an electrician on various submarines. After retirement from the Navy, he moved to Maine and was a Master Maine Guide for hunting and fishing. 

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at Carroll P. Foster Post  No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna.

Memorials can be made to the Marion VA Community Living Center or to the American Parkinson Disease Association.
