Gerald “Jerry” Edwin Miltenberger, 82, of Carbondale, died at 2:06 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at his home in Carbondale with his family by his side.
He was born on Sept. 5, 1934, in Anna, the son of Virgil E. and Nellie Boyd Miltenberger.
He was a 1952 graduate of Dongola High School. Following high school, he attended Southern Illinois University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in speech correction. He served in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Intrepid CV-11 during 1957 and 1958.
Following his service in the Navy, he received a masters degree in audiology from Colorado State University. He worked for 49 years as a clinical audiologist and a speech pathologist. In his later career in Southern Illinois, he worked at Choate Mental Health & Developmental Center in Anna and with Dr. Mike Delaney and Dr. David Mann.
He met the love of his life, Damaris, and together they blended their families when they married on May 14, 1983, in New Orleans, La.
He is survived by his wife, Damaris; sons W. Jud Miltenberger (Colleen) of Huntington, W. Va., Cliff Scott of Long Meadow, Mass., and John (EunMi) Shipley of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter Laura (Matt) Bishop of Carbondale; 10 grandchildren, Alex, Julia and Dru Miltenberger, Camille and Kathleen Scott, Hana and TK Shipley and Lily, Olivia and Molly Bishop. He also liked connecting with his extended family, which included many Miltenberger and Boyd cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by an infant brother, Joseph.
He was an avid golfer and loved being outside in the sun at Hickory Ridge Golf Course. In fact, the week before his 75th birthday, he made a “hole in one” on the 6th hole at Hickory Ridge. He looked forward to attending Saluki ball games but also enjoyed his grandchildren’s ball games. He was a big fan of coffee and sweets and took joy in sharing donuts with his grandchildren, friends and coworkers.
He was also very grateful to have been a friend of Bill W’s for 36 years and truly appreciated the friends he made over the years.
A celebration of life event will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hickory Ridge Golf Course Club House.
