Gilbert R. Cherrick
Gilbert R. Cherrick, MD, 94, of Anna, died Thursday, May 13, 2021, at 4:40 a.m. at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.
Dr. Cherrick was born in Anna on Sept. 29, 1926, the son of Abraham L. Cherrick and Essie Magidson Cherrick.
He graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, Washington University and Harvard Medical School (1954).
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, who served in the Pacific Theater and with the Army of Occupation in Japan.
During his medical career, Dr. Cherrick worked in medical research, clinical practice and administration. He authored and co-authored 30 medical publications.
Notably he worked with Dr. Sheila Sherlock, London University, in liver research; he was director of medicine at Nemazee Hospital in Shiraz, Iran; he was physician to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and New York City Police Department and was in private practice in New York City.
He retired from the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale, N.Y., where he served as medical director.
Dr. Cherrick was a benefactor to many, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he was one of six founding members of Friends of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, The Harvard Club and the St. Louis Symphony.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Walter H. Cherrick.
He is survived by his nephew, Alan Lee Cherrick (Roberta Gold Cherrick) of Chicago; a great-nephew, Dale S. Cherrick (Jennifer Cameron Cherrick) of Decatur; a great-niece, Esther Michael Cherrick, DVM, of Chicago; and three great-great-nieces, Vaida, Kamryn and Evelyn Cherrick of Decatur.
Graveside inurnment will be held at the Anna City Cemetery at 1 p.m. Thursday, today, with Rabbi Michael Datz officiating.
