Jimmie Dale Smith

Jimmie Dale Smith, 85, of Anna, died at 5:02 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on May 8, 1931, in Carbondale, the son of Leo Everett and Hattie Frances Bryant Smith.

He is survived by his two sons, Elliott Blayne (Leta Rich) Smith of Cobden and David Scott (Carla Bell) Smith of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Amanda (Brad) Sheridan of Anna, Kallie Smith of St. Louis, Meredith (Harold) Frey of Cobden, Sarah (Tim) Luczkiw of Athens, Ohio, Laura (Luke) Fleisher of Carterville, Ethan Smith of Henderson, Tenn., and Jonathan Smith of Rochester; seven great-grandchildren and three on the way; three sisters, Ellen (Tom) Coffman of Anna, Ruth Imogene “Jean” Forrest of Granite City and Peggy Sue (Bill) Hickman of Forsyth; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Charles Matthew Smith; and one sister, Nancy Ann Walker.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, receiving a Purple Heart for his combat injury. Early in his career he worked for Bunny Bread and Union County Hospital in security; he later worked for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith were at noon Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Alto Pass, with R.W. McAlister officiating. Interment was in the Alto Pass Cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard military honors team of Marion.

Memorials can be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or to the donor’s choice.
