Joe J. Smith

Joe J. Smith, 72, of Jonesboro, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at his home. 

He was born on Aug. 18, 1948, in Anna, the son of Ellis and Virginia Hamel Smith.  

Mr. Smith is survived by three sons, Little Joe (Samantha) Smith of Grand Tower, James Lee Smith of Jonesboro and Danny (Carol) Hancock of Ware; seven grandchildren, Dustin, Ethan, Bam, Rusty, Morgan, Bridget and Daniel; two great-grandchildren, Remi and Bailey; girlfriend Mary Norris of Jonesboro; siblings Margaret (Larry) Dale of Jonesboro, Grace (Butch) Norton of Wolf Lake, Kathryn (John) Yow of Carbondale, Elvis (Judy) Smith of Vienna and Ellis (Ruby) Smith of Wolf Lake; nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Harold Smith.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked many years as a diesel mechanic. 

Graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City. Military rites will be accorded by local area veterans and the Illinois Army National Guard honor team of Marion. 

Everyone who attends the service will be required to wear a face covering and to observe social distancing guidelines.
